The place where the city of Ryazan stood in the period from the 10th to the 13th century. Located on the high bank of the Oka River, it was a large trading city, built as a border outpost of Kievan Rus and was the center of the Ryazan principality. In December 1237, the troops of Batu Khan after a nine-day siege broke into the city. Ryazan was completely burned, almost all the inhabitants and the prince were killed.
